Highway 160Comment Period Open for Highway 160 Project
Widening Hwy 160 South of Hwy 49 Accelerated to 2021

This story has been updated based on additional information from CRTPO. See Widening of Highway 160 has been Accelerated to 2021.

(July 16, 2017) The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) is accepting comments to the local 2018-2027 DRAFT Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). Local projects in the TIP will be incorporated into the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), which the North Carolina Department of Transportation will adopt in August 2017. CRTPO is required to adopt its TIP in September. Residents and other interested persons may submit comments on projects in the TIP to CRTPO through August 9.

The chart below lists two I-77 projects and one NC Highway 160 project in the DRAFT TIP. See the full list HERE.

NCDOT released the initial DRAFT 2018-2027 STIP in January 2017. On June 28, NCDOT released a Revised DRAFT 2018-2027 STIP that contained a series of project accelerations and other changes.

In the January initial DRAFT, construction for the widening of Highway 160 from South Tryon Street to the South Carolina State Line was scheduled to begin in 2022. In the June Revised DRAFT, construction has been accelerated to 2021. Widening Highway 160 has been moving up in the highway construction schedule since 2013 when it wasn't projected to be widened before 2035.

Funding for any project scheduled to begin right of way acquisition within the first five years of the STIP is considered committed and not subject to reprioritization. Thus if CRTPO and NCDOT adopt plans that include Highway 160 construction in 2021, funding will be committed. Widening Highway 160 south of South Tryon Street was not included In the previous (2016-2025) STIP at all.

The project includes widening the roadway to four lanes with a grassy median, sidewalks, and bike lanes.
