West Boulevard Relocated due to Fourth Runway Construction
(April 17, 2025) West Boulevard has been relocated to follow the former Piney
Top Drive and Byrum Drive westbound to Steele Creek Road due to airport expansion. The ten mile marked detour is over, but subsequent
phases for the balance of the project will utilize lane shifts. No further offsite detours will be required to facilitate
the remaining construction.

The Charlotte Douglas Airport is building a 10,000 foot fourth parallel runway to accommodate future increased air traffic.
It was originally planned for 12,000 feet, which would have required the relocation of West Boulevard south of Byrum Drive,
but planners decided 10,000 feet was sufficient for future airport needs.
The project includes a South End Around Taxiway (SEAT), which actually is the part that required the relocation of West Boulevard. The SEAT
will allow airplanes to taxi from the western runway to the terminal without crossing other runways and causing delays.

To support the different phases of construction, offsite detours, and traffic shifts, a combination of temporary
traffic signals, modified signalization, and permanent new signalization had been designed. Temporary traffic
signals had been installed at Yorkmont Road and Byrum Drive and at Shopton Road and Sandy Porter Road to accommodate
the ten mile detour before it was no longer needed.

A short portion of West Boulevard was retained to provide truck access to the Intermodal Facility. Otherwise, traffic going north on Steele
Creek Road should turn right at the new West Boulevard to continue eastward
on Highway 160.
