January Programs at McDowell Nature Center

(December 12, 2019) The McDowell Nature Center and Preserve offers a wide variety of programs for adults, children, and families. Listed below are programs for January 2020. Program name: Self-Guided Forest Immersion
Date of Program: January 3, 2020 – Friday
Time of program: 10:00am to 4:00pm

Ages: 3 and up

Description of program: Immerse yourself in this self-guided drop-in experience that leads you through the paved Four Seasons Trail following signs encouraging awareness of the natural world. Journey along the trail using all of your senses to experience the forest in an entirely new way. When complete, come back to the nature center for some hot cocoa or tea. No pre-registration required. (NOTE: all other programs require pre-registration.)

Notes: This program is geared towards adults, but children can enjoy it as well. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate, comfortable clothing. You may even want to bring a light blanket that can be put on the ground.
Activity will be held at the Four Seasons Trail - Go past the nature center parking lot to the bottom parking lot. The Four Seasons trail is blazed with a red triangle. This is our only paved trail.

Program name: Explore the Carolinas: Congaree National Forest

Description: Adventure is out there!! Spend the day exploring and discovering new places in the Carolinas. Trips will all be within 2 hours of Charlotte. Meet at McDowell Nature Center for all trips and ride in a van to the destination of the day. The first Friday of each month will take us to a new spot to explore. This month: Congaree National Forest. Pre-registration required.

Program name: Nature Photography Series: Winter Wildlife

Description: Nature provides an ever-changing landscape for a photographer's frame. Celebrate the beauty of the Piedmont through your lens in this new program series as we explore the Preserve through seasons, light, and color. Each class will feature a different hike and habitat for shooting. Bring your own camera. No experience required. Pre-registration required (for all participants, adult and child alike).

Program name: Youth Hiking Club

Description: Does your child like to explore the outdoors? Are they curious about the natural world? This Youth Hiking Club series is the place for them! Explore a different trail on the preserve every first Saturday afternoon of the month and meet new hiking buddies in the area. Hike towards health, wellness, and prizes as part of the 100 mile hiking club. Pre-registration required.

Description: Drop by the nature center to pick up your Winter Quest scavenger hunt materials and discover hidden treasures found in the nature preserve. What do you need to bring? A camera or smart phone with a camera to document your finds, your family, and a sense of adventure! The scavenger hunt should take 45 minutes to 1 hour. Description: Have a K-9 companion? Want to meet other dog lovers in Mecklenburg County? Join McDowell staff as we come together with our "Tails" and hit the "Trails." Meet the staff at McDowell Nature Center to connect with people and nature all while making a positive difference in the community by removing invasive plant species. Pre-registration required (for all participants, adult and child alike).
Notes: Participants under the age of 18 will need an adult/guardian to sign their waivers. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate, comfortable clothing to be working outdoors for 3 hours. Come prepared to cut down small shrubs with provided hand tools. Description of program: An Unique Twist on Birthday Parties. You get an exciting and one of kind nature themed program that includes hands-on learning and exploration, as well as a craft that children can take home!
Birthday parties are for ages 4-12 year olds with up to 15 of their friends.
Parties will be at McDowell Nature Center Classroom
Program cost is $185 which includes a 1-hour program, themed gift bag per child, and the use of the classroom for two additional hours before or after the program.
