Historical
Society Meetings for October and November
(September
27, 2004; October 14, 2004) The next meeting of the Steele Creek Historical And
Genealogical Society will be on Monday October 25, 2004 at 7:00 p.m.
The meeting will be at the Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church
Family Life Center because early voting will be occurring in the
library meeting room.
The speaker for
will be Mr. Rusty Rozzelle who is the Water Quality Program Manager
for Mecklenburg County. He will talk about Rozzelle's Ferry and
the history of the Catawba River. The Rozzelle family has lived in
Mecklenburg County since the late 1700's and ran the ferry service
across the Catawba River near where NC Highway 16 now crosses it.
His presentation will concentrate on the history of the Catawba
River, but he can also answer questions about family history.
The Society's
November meeting is the annual Christmas celebration and also will
be held at Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church. The meeting
will be preceded by a Christmas feast beginning at 6:00 pm. Please
bring a covered dish to share. Meat and drinks will be provided. The speaker
will be Polly Proctor, who will talk about the History of Yuletide
Celebrations and Christmas customs.
The Steele
Creek Historical And Genealogical Society meets the last Monday of
each month at 7:00 p.m. (except July and December) at the Steele
Creek Library
at 13620 Steele Creek Road. Dues are $15.00 payable by January each
year.
A quarterly
newsletter, Gleanings, is published in January, April, July, and
October. Copies of Gleanings and other documents on Steele Creek
history from the Society's collections are now housed at the new
Steele Creek Branch Library.
