Wal-Mart
May be Coming to Tega Cay
(September 21,
2004) Developers hoping to build a 200,000 square-foot Wal-Mart
Supercenter near the intersection of SC Highway 160 and Gold
Hill Road continue to negotiate with Tega Cay officials. Developers
need Tega Cay to agree to annex 15 acres at the store site, and Tega
Cay is asking for signage restrictions, anti-crime measures, road
improvements, and other concessions before they will agree to the
annexation. Significant opposition exists among area residents, and
the town is adding the requirements to make the store more
acceptable to the community.
The new Wal-Mart
would be about one mile south of the North Carolina state line and
about three miles south of a similar-sized store planned for the
intersection of Highways 49 and 160 in Steele Creek.
