Historical
Society Meetings for August and September
(July
25, 2004) The next meeting of the Steele Creek Historical
And Genealogical Society will be on Monday August 30, 2004 at 7:00
p.m. at the Steele Creek
Library at 13620 Steele Creek Road. The speaker will be Mike Scoggins of the
Historical Center of York County. He plans to talk about the
Revolutionary War in the South.
Mrs. Ann
Williams will speak on September 27. She is the author of "Your
Affectionate Daughter, Isabella." The book is a historic tale
gleaned from letters found in the Hugh Torrence house in
northwestern Mecklenburg County. (Park Road Books has the book for
sale.) Tours of the Hugh Torrence house and store are offered from 2
to 5 p.m. on the third Sunday of the month through September.
The Steele
Creek Historical And Genealogical Society meets the last Monday of
each month at 7:00 p.m. (except July and December) at the Steele Creek
Library. Dues are $15.00
payable by January each year.
A quarterly
newsletter, Gleanings, is published in January, April, July, and
October. Copies of Gleanings and other documents on Steele Creek
history from the Society's collections will be housed at the new
Steele Creek Branch Library.
