Announcing the "Reformation" of the Steele Creek Community Concert
Band
(June 2, 2004;
Revised June 4, 2004)
The new Steele Creek Community Concert Band will have an
organizational meeting at 10:00 am on June 26 in the band room at
Olympic High School (4301 Sandy Porter Road, Charlotte, NC 28273).
The
community concert band is open to all amateur musicians in the area
who want to play for "fun". Musicians of all ages, from those who
have completed at least the sixth grade band programs through
retirement age, are invited and welcome to join. It will be an
additional opportunity for students at Southwest Middle, Kennedy
Middle, and Olympic High to have experience playing in an
organized band. The community concert band will be there to support
the Steele Creek Community. This is your chance to play again as
well as support your community.
There will be a 15
minute organizational session followed by a music session. Bring
your instrument and be prepared to play!
RSVP's will be
appreciated to: Keith Paulus @ 704-587-9718.

The original
Steel Creek Community Band was formed in 1883. ("Steel" became
"Steele" around 1940.) According to Mr. Robert Collins Freeman, in
an article published in the Charlotte Observer in 1938, "No
affair of consequence took place in Charlotte that we did not
furnish music." Over the years, a total of 36 men were members of
the band. "None were ever known to be in trouble or arrested for a
violation of the law." The band's last public engagement was in
Wadesboro in 1925.
