5 New Schools for Steele Creek by 2014
(October 16, 2003)
As many as 5 new elementary schools may be built in the Steele Creek
section of Mecklenburg County by
2014 according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg School's Long-Range Master
Plan, which was adopted by the Board of Education at its October 14
meeting. (See map.)
School system
planners project an increase of about 46,000 students system-wide
over the next 10 years, and they see a need for 23 new schools,
including 19 elementary, 1 middle, and 3 high schools.
Planners
anticipate that new residential development will add 8,000 to 10,000
new students in Steele Creek over the next 10 years. To accommodate
this increase, they see a need for 5 additional elementary schools.
None of the potential middle or high school target areas are within
Steele Creek. The numbered targeted areas for new elementary schools
in Steele Creek are:
15. Dixie River
Road/Garrison Road area
16. Shopton Road West/Winget Road area
17. Shopton Road West/Sledge Road area
18. Youngblood Road/Steele Creek Road area
19. York Road/Red Fez Club Road area
The plan does not
include actual site selections, but new schools generally would be
located within the target areas on the map below.
The plan also
calls for enlarging a number of existing schools, including Steele
Creek Elementary School and Kennedy Middle School.
