Learn about Steele Creek
History
(April 26, 2003)
The
Steele Creek Historical and Genealogical Society meets the last
Monday each month (except July and December) at the Central Steele
Creek Presbyterian Church Resource Center.
You can learn about life
in Steele Creek years ago when it was a rural, farming
community. Here are programs scheduled for the next three months:
April 28 - Ms. Nora Brooks will be
portraying General Robert E. Lee's granddaughter Mildred Lee. Nora
is well known for her portrayal, and this promises to be a fun
event. (Special meeting place for April: Central Steele Creek Church
Fellowship Hall.)
May 26 - Mr. Joe Griffin, Sr. of
Pineville has compiled a history of the town and several churches in
the area. He will reminisce about the Town of Pineville.
June 30 - Professor Dan Patterson
of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an expert on
cemetery headstone carvings and will give a presentation on that
subject. Professor Patterson has been corresponding with local
historians about the Bingham family of stone carvers who lived in
Mecklenburg County.
