Observer Series Features Steele Creek Dairy Farm
(March 17, 2002) Charlotte Observer columnist Tommy Tomlinson
began a new weekly series today. He plans to visit each of the 29
ZIP Codes in Mecklenburg County and write a column on life inside
its boundaries.
The first column
is about ZIP Code 28273, which covers the eastern half of the Steele
Creek community. Tomlinson profiles the Grier family farm, which has
been in operation at the same location on Brown-Grier Road since
before 1780.
The Grier farm is
one of only four dairy farms still operating in Mecklenburg County.
Cows graze in pastures located on both sides of Brown-Grier Road and
pass between them through the culvert that Steele Creek itself flows
through under the road.
The Grier family
continues on while neighboring farms are converted into subdivisions
and the once rural roads become clogged with traffic. Change is
coming rapidly to Steele Creek, but this one remnant of area history
remains.
