June Programs at McDowell Nature Center

McDowell Nature Center and Preserve offers a
wide variety of programs for adults, children, and families. Listed
below are programs for June. To sign up or for more

Program name: Lake Wylie Family Kayak Tour Dates of Program: June
2, 9, 16 and 30, 2018 – All Saturday’s Times of program: 9:30am
to 11:30am and 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Prices: $15.00 – Single –
Ages 10 and up $20.00 – Tandem - Ages 5 and up
Description of program: Paddle the edges of McDowell Nature Preserve
with our certified and experienced instructors while enjoying nature
with your family. Learn about the natural history that makes Lake
Wylie a great destination for wildlife viewing. All equipment
provided. Registration is required.
Notes: Children 5-9 years
old are required to be in a tandem with an adult. One person
registers per tandem kayak; 10 and up can be in a single or tandem
as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Please dress
appropriately for the weather. Bring your our own water bottle,
towel, extra clothes, sunscreen, hat and a snack. Tour is about 2.5
miles of paddling.

Description of program: Ever wonder why birds have
differently shaped beaks? It's to help them eat their favorite food,
whether that's nectar, seeds, insects or mice. Test your dexterity
to see if you can catch food like native birds. Registration NOT
required, walk-ins welcome.

Program name: Animal
Encounter Date of Program: June 2 to August 25, 2018 – Every
Saturday Time of program: 2:00pm to 2:30pm

Description of program: Smell a snake, tickle
a turtle, or get slimed by a slug! Every Saturday at 2pm from June
to August, drop by for a chance to interact with McDowell's animal
ambassadors. Registration NOT required, walk-ins welcome.

Program name: Lake Wylie Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Tour Dates
of Program: June 9 and 30, 2018 – Both are Saturday’s Time of
program: 1:30pm to 3:30pm
Price: $25.00 Ages: 18 and up
Description of program: Enjoy the afternoon Stand Up Paddle
boarding on Lake Wylie. This two-hour tour is for beginners and
advanced skill levels. We will paddle the edges of McDowell Nature
Preserve, look for wildlife and enjoy spending some time outside on
the water. Registration is required.
Notes: Please dress
appropriately for the weather (quick drying clothing, no cotton) and
be prepared to be in the water. Bring your our own water bottle,
towel, hat and sunscreen.

Program
name: Lake Wylie Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Yoga Dates of
Program: June 9, 2018 – Saturday Time of program: 9:00am to
11:00am
Price: $30.00 Ages: 18 and up
Description
of program: Bring a whole new perspective to your asana practice
with yoga on a SUP! Become immersed in nature, gain piece of mind,
and challenge your balance and strength. This class includes a brief
paddle basics class along with a gentle vinyasa practice led by an
experienced and certified 200 RYT instructor. Prior experience is
not necessary. All gear is included. Registration is required.
Notes: You must be able to swim to participate. Please bring
your our own water bottle, sunscreen, towel, hat, shoes with a back
strap and a change of clothing (quick dry clothing, no cotton).

Program name: Trails and Tails: Reedy
Creek Nature Preserve Date of Program: June 9, 2018 – Saturday

Description of program: Have a K-9 companion? Want to
meet other dog lovers in Mecklenburg County? Join McDowell Nature
staff as we come together with our "Tails" and hit the "Trails."
Each month we will meet at a different park, preserve or greenway
around the Charlotte area. This month's location is at Reedy Creek
Nature Preserve. Please call Chad Moore at 980-314-1128 for more
information.
Notes: Please bring mutt mitts and a leash no
longer than 6' in length. Come prepared to hike at least 2 miles on
uneven terrain. Wear weather-appropriate, comfortable clothing and
sturdy closed toe shoes. Please bring your own water bottle and
water for your four legged friend as well!

Earth and has unique physical properties that enables life to exist
on Earth. Drop-in for a journey through the water cycle and take
home your own water cycle story. Registration NOT required.

Description of program: Enjoy the great
outdoors while getting fit as we set off at a comfortable, yet
steady pace through the nature preserve. Open to novice and skilled
hikers alike, this adult hiking club will cover 2-3 miles on uneven
terrain. Registration is required.
Notes: This hike qualifies
for our 100 mile hike club. Come prepared to hike approximately 2 to
3 miles on uneven terrain. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and
weather-appropriate, comfortable clothing. Please bring your own
water bottle.

Bird Bingo Date of Program: June 17, 2018 – Sunday Time of

Description of program: Combine your love of birds AND Bingo
during this fun and educational activity at McDowell Nature Center.
Learn exciting facts about our native birds. This wonderful summer

Description of program: Spend
your Saturday morning in the beautiful outdoors instead of watching
Saturday morning cartoons on the couch. Start with an exciting
nature themed storybook read out-loud, followed by a self-led
outdoor activity for your family. It is a great way to start the

alike.

Description of
program: Discover common reptiles found at McDowell Nature Preserve.
During this drop-in activity, participants will meet some of the
nature center's animal ambassadors, learn about their incredible
adaptations and create a craft to take home and share with the

Description of program: An Unique Twist on Birthday
Parties. You get an exciting and one of kind nature themed program
that includes hands-on learning and exploration, as well as a craft
that children can take home! Birthday parties are for ages 4-12
year olds with up to 15 of their friends. Parties will be at
McDowell Nature Center Classroom Program cost is $185 which
includes a 1-hour program, themed gift bag per child, and the use of
the classroom for two addition hours before or after the program.
