7-week child-led class is held ENTIRELY outdoors! Children are
allowed to learn and grow at their own pace as they explore,
experience and truly play with nature. On any given day, children
may choose to investigate a stream, make a mud pie buffet, follow
deer tracks through the woods and much more - all under the guidance
of experienced environmental educators. Research has shown that time
spent in nature, especially engaged in play, is critical to a
child's development. Not only does outdoor play lead to increased
physical activity but it can alleviate symptoms of ADHD and asthma
as well as promote creativity, self-discipline, problem-solving

Program name: The Sky
is the Limit: A Night of Astronomical Fun!

Description of program:
Stargaze with a team of McDowell Naturalists during a night of fun
and learning as we participate in the 2018 North Carolina Statewide
Star Party. Enjoy hands-on astronomy activities, view the night sky
through a telescope, roast s'mores by a glowing campfire and explore
the preserve on a starlit night hike. In the event of inclement
weather, rain plans will be observed.Registration is required for
ALL participants as space is limited for this special event. Please
call McDowell Nature Center to register at 980-314-1128.
Notes: Please wear weather-appropriate, comfortable clothing
appropriate for evening stargazing and closed-toe shoes for hiking.
No flashlights; we will provide all lighting needed.

Description of
program: Amphibians such as frogs and toads play an important role
as an indicator of the overall health of an ecosystem. McDowell
Nature Center is participating in FrogWatch USA to provide a citizen
science opportunity for local residents. Travel to the McDowell
Prairie wetland to explore this unique ecosystem and gather data on
the calls of local frogs and toads. Transportation provided.
Registration is required.

Description of program: In this ladies-only
program, we will gather from all three nature centers to develop new
skills, explore the natural world and create lasting friendships as
you conquer recreational and environmental challenges. Spend the day
exploring nature preserves, as our staff of all female guides share
their knowledge in a positive social space and encourage you to
explore the great outdoors! Participants can be dropped off and
picked up at the nature center most convenient for you (please
choose option when registering), then we will travel to meet
participants from other nature centers to continue our adventure.
Registration is required.
Notes: This is a drop-off program -
parents must sign children in and out. Please dress appropriately
for the weather. Bring plenty of water, bagged lunch, snacks and any
other personal comfort items.

and one of kind nature themed program that includes hands-on
learning and exploration, as well as a craft that children can take

Birthday parties are for ages 4-12 year olds with up to 15

Program cost is $185 which includes a 1-hour program,
themed gift bag per child, and the use of the classroom for two
addition hours before or after the program.
