County Set to
Rename a Portion of Dixie River Road This Week
(June 18,
2011) The Mecklenburg County Commission will hold a public hearing
on the proposed renaming of a portion of Dixie River Road and
Sandhaven Way to Shopton Road at its regular meeting this Tuesday.
(See
Agenda, Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, June 21, 2011.)
The agenda item
includes the following background statement: "Due to the Charlotte
Department of Transportation’s Dixie River Road alignment project,
Dixie River Road is being extended from its current intersection
with Dixie River Road and Sandhaven Way, south to Steele Creek Road.
Currently, Dixie River Road turns at this intersection, crosses
I-485, and intersects Steele Creek Road, opposite Shopton Road. The
proposal is to rename the existing East-West portion of the current
Dixie River Road and all the existing Sandhaven Way to Shopton
Road."
The
Commission likely will approve the name change on Tuesday,
immediately after closing the public hearing. The County Commission
is responsible for the renaming because the entire length of the
roads to be renamed are outside the Charlotte corporate limits.
Dixie
River Road was realigned at Steele Creek Road from its location at
the current site of the CVS Pharmacy to line up with Shopton Road.
Once the new Dixie River Road is open, Shopton Road would be the
most appropriate name for the old section.
The
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the New Dixie River Road is this Friday,
June 24 at 10:00 AM. (See
Steele Creek Road Realignment Ribbon-Cutting is June 24.)
