Olympic Boys
Basketball Team Advances to Western Regionals
(February 27,
2011) The Olympic High School boys basketball team defeated Vance
High School 55 to 37 Friday night to advance to the North Carolina
Division 4A Western Regional Basketball Championships this weekend
in Greensboro. They will play Mount Tabor High School of
Winston-Salem (25-4) in the semi-finals at 8:30 on Friday, following
the game between West Charlotte and Reagan High School of Forsyth
County. The western championship game is Saturday at 8:00 PM in
Greensboro, and the state 4A championship is on Saturday, March 12
in Chapel Hill.
The game against Vance was close during the first half with many
lead changes. Olympic led by 21 to 20 at the half but outscored
Vance 34 to 17 in the second half, winning 55 to 37. Allerick
Freeman led Olympic's scoring with 17 points.
Olympic has a 28-1 record and is ranked #1 in the Charlotte Observer
Sweet 16. It's only loss was to Terry Sanford High School of
Fayetteville by a score of 70 to 71 in December. MaxPreps rates
Terry Sanford the #1 4A team in North Carolina and rates Olympic #2.
However, West Charlotte, Reagan, and Mount Tabor are rated #3
through #5, and Olympic will have to survive games against the top
teams in the west in order to meet Terry Sanford again. Terry
Sanford has advanced in the Eastern regional tournament in
Fayetteville.
Olympic is lead by senior Reggie Arceneaux, junior Josh Smith, and
sophomore Allerik Freeman.
