CMPD Citizens
Academy Starts in March at Training Academy
(February 27,
2011) The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) will be offering
its
Citizens Academy and
Community Education Workshops for Mecklenburg County residents 18
years and older beginning March 15. Most of the sessions will be held at the CMPD
Training Academy (1770 Shopton Road, at the corner of Beam Road) in
Steele Creek. Sessions are scheduled during March through June and
again in September through December.
The Citizens Academy and Community Education Workshops provide
county residents with an opportunity to learn more about the CMPD
and its services to the community.
Citizens are invited
to participate in as many of the Community Education Workshops as
they desire based on their interest and availability.
Additional sessions,
including practical workshops and tours of facilities at police
headquarters, are only open to citizens who have applied for and
have been accepted to the Citizens Academy. In order to graduate
from the Citizen’s Academy a participant must attend the required
workshops within a two-year time limit.
During the workshops citizens will have the opportunity to get a
behind-the-scenes look at the services of the CMPD from a diverse
group of police department personnel. Topics will range from the
history of the CMPD to Criminal Investigations. Citizens Academy
participants also will be able to participate in activities at the
Police Firing Range, Driver Training Facility, and Police
Headquarters. They also will be able to attend the Police Resource
and Activity Day and see demonstrations by SWAT, the Bomb Squad
(right), the
Canine Unit, and other specialized units.
To attend sessions, you
must sign up at least one week in advance here:
