City Council
Approves Land Purchase for New Steele Creek Police Station
(November
17, 2010) At its November 8 meeting, the Charlotte City Council
approved funds for the purchase of land for a new station for the
Steele Creek Division of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police
Department.
According to
Captain Allan Rutledge, Steele Creek Division Commander, the
department is currently in negotiations with a property owner to
purchase a three-acre plot at the corner of S Tryon St and
Westinghouse Blvd. "While in attendance at community meetings, I
consistently heard community members request that the police station
be located closer to the actual Steele Creek area. We heard those
requests." Captain Rutledge said.
The money
approved out of this year's fiscal budget is only to purchase the
land. The Steele Creek Police Station construction is on the list of
Capital Improvements for next fiscal year. In essence, if all goes
smoothly, the city will purchase the land in the next few months,
begin construction of the new station sometime around fall of 2011,
and occupy the building in late fall or winter of 2012.
The Steele Creek
Division currently is located at the old Police Academy Building
behind the new Police and Fire Academy at the corner of Shopton Road
and Beam Road. This building is grossly inadequate to meet the needs
of the division as well as being located near the edge of the
division territory.
