County Acquires
Site for Regional Library off Shopton Road
(October 4, 2009)
At a meeting of the Citizens Advisory Group for the Steele Creek
Area Plan,
Brian Beavers, Director
of Organizational Resources for the Public Library of Charlotte and
Mecklenburg County, stated that the county had acquired a five acre
site off Shopton Road near Steele Creek Road for a new southwest
regional library.
The site is
approximately half way between the Steele Creek and West Boulevard
library branches in a geographically underserved area.
The Steele Creek
Branch Library is approximately 15,000 square feet and is one of the
busiest libraries in the system.
The new regional
library will be from 30,000 to 40,000 square feet and may also serve
as a logistics center, handling transfers and distribution of books
and other resources throughout the system, due to its location near
I-485.
The site is in the
Steele Creek Place commercial development just west of Gable Road
near the intersection of Shopton Road and Steele Creek Road.
In 2007 Mecklenburg
County voters passed a land bond that included funds to purchase the
land for the new southwest regional library. Funds to actually
construct the library will come from future bonds. Due to the
current economy, the Mecklenburg County Commissioners have been
reluctant to sell bonds already approved. Construction of the
library will depend on the willingness of the Commissioners to
submit new bonds to the voters and of the voters to approve them.
Thus no timetable currently is available for the construction of the
new library
