New School
Attendance Boundaries Adopted
(November 16, 2008)
At its November 12 meeting, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board
adopted attendance boundaries for the three new elementary schools
opening is Steele Creek over the next two years. (See
Elementary School Attendance Zones map in PDF format.)
The school board also changed middle and high school boundaries to
move the Berewick area in the Kennedy Middle School and Olympic High
School attendance zones.
The three new
elementary schools have temporary names. Parents and other area
residents will have an opportunity to meet and propose formal names
for school board consideration in the spring before they open.
A description of the
new boundaries is as follows:
New Dixie River Road
Elementary School
The New Dixie River
Road Elementary School is located on Dixie River Road within the new
Berewick Regional Park. (At the
on the map below. See
WikiMapia Locator.) It is scheduled to open in fall 2009.
(See
CMS Construction Update.)
The Mecklenburg
County Park and Recreation Department will operate a recreation
center in the school's gym. Bond money from the 2008 Park and Rec
bonds will help pay for this facility.
The new attendance
area includes Berewick and other areas north of Berewick that
currently are within the Berryhill Elementary School attendance
zone. It also includes other areas north of Westinghouse Boulevard
and west of Steele Creek that currently are within the Steele Creek
Elementary School attendance zone. These include the Stowe Creek,
Steele Creek Subdivision, Steele Oaks-Braddock Green, and Cedarbrook
neighborhoods.
If all students
within this boundary attend the New Dixie River Road Elementary
School, it is projected to be at 87% capacity when it opens in fall
2009 and at 97% capacity in fall 2010 (without mobiles).
Steele Creek Elementary School
In addition to losing
students living west of Steele Creek and south of Brown-Grier Road
to the New Dixie River Road Elementary School, Steele Creek
Elementary School will lose students in the Twelve Oaks and TaraGate
neighborhoods to Lake Wylie Elementary School. Steele Creek
Elementary School is projected to go from 206% capacity this school
year to 128% capacity in fall 2009 and 129% capacity in fall 2010.
New Youngblood/Steele Creek
Road Elementary School
The New
Youngblood/Steele Creek Road Elementary School is located on the
corner of Hamilton Road and Smith Road (At
the on the map below. See
WikiMapia Locator.) It is scheduled to open in fall 2009.
(See
CMS Construction Update.)
Its attendance zone
generally will include areas east of Youngblood and Zoar Roads,
south of S Tryon Street, west of Moss Road, and north of the South
Carolina state line, including the Creekshire neighborhood and
excluding Lions Gate and Savannah Townhomes.
If all students
within this boundary attend the New Youngblood/Steele Creek Road
Elementary School, it is projected to be at 98% capacity when it
opens in fall 2009 and at 105% capacity in fall 2010 (without
mobiles).
Lake Wylie Elementary School
Lake Wylie Elementary
School will lose students from Yorkshire and other areas along
Choate Circle and gain students from the Twelve Oaks and TaraGate
neighborhoods.
Lake Wylie Elementary
School is projected to go from 139% capacity this school year to
109% capacity in fall 2009.
New York Road/Red Fez Club
Road Elementary School
The New York
Road/Red Fez Club Road Elementary School is located just east of
Grand Palisades Parkway adjacent to the Palisades community. (At
the on the map below. See
WikiMapia Locator.) It is scheduled to open in fall 2010.
(See
CMS Construction Update.) Students assigned to this new
school will continue to attend Winget Park Elementary School during
the 2009-2010 school year.
It will be located on
the south end of a parcel of land recently acquired by
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. A high school (projected to open in
2012) will be located on the north end of this parcel. The
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department plans to build a
neighborhood park on the school site that will be funded by bond
money from the 2008 Park and Rec bonds.
Its attendance zone
will include RiverPointe and other areas south of McDowell Nature
Preserve. It also will include neighborhoods located between Shopton
Road West and Steele Creek Road as far north as Waterlyn and
neighborhoods west of Youngblood and Zoar Roads, excluding
Creekshire.
If all students
within this boundary attend the New
York Road/Red Fez
Club Road
Elementary School, it is projected to be at 94% capacity when it
opens in fall 2010 (without mobiles).
Winget Park Elementary School
For the 2009-2010
school year, Winget Park Elementary School will lose students living
south of S Tryon Street in neighborhoods along Steele Creek Road and
Hamilton Road to the new Youngblood/Steele Creek Road Elementary
School, and for the 2010-2011 school year it will lose students who
will be reassigned to the New York Road/Red Fez Club Road Elementary
School.
Winget Park
Elementary School is projected to go from 155% capacity this school
year to 143% capacity in fall 2009 and 75% capacity in fall 2010.
Kennedy Middle School and
Olympic High School
The attendance
zones for Kennedy Middle School and Olympic High School were revised
so that students from the New Dixie River Road Elementary School
will feed into Kennedy and Olympic. The Berewick area currently is
within the attendance zones for Wilson Middle School and West
Mecklenburg High School. (See
Middle School Attendance Zones map and
High School Attendance Zones map in PDF format.)
Future School Construction
The
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Ten-Year Plan for Capital Projects
includes one additional middle school and one additional high school
in the Palisades area of Steele Creek. The new high school is
projected to open in 2012 and will be located adjacent to the New
York Road/Red Fez Club Road Elementary School. (See
WikiMapia Locator.) The new middle school is projected to
open in fall 2013. A site for this school has not yet been
announced.
No additional public
elementary schools are planned in Steele Creek through 2017. As
growth continues in Steele Creek, schools will continue to be
overcrowded and stretch capacities.
