STEELE CREEK NEWS
County Receives
More Greenway Donations
(April
1, 2008) The Mecklenburg County Board of County Commissioners
accepted two donations for greenways at its April 1 meeting.
Steele Creek
Apartment Properties donated an approximately three and a half acre
easement along Steele Creek adjacent to Springs Apartments just
south of S Tryon Street. This is one of only two properties needed
to complete a greenway corridor from S Tryon Street to Carowinds
Boulevard. The additional property follows Steele Creek along the
edge of Lakemont Industrial Park and borders the Carowinds
campground.
The Springs
Apartments property is outlined in green on the map below. The
donated easement includes the SWIM buffer (shown with brown shading)
plus some extra width at S Tryon Street to accommodate pedestrian
access from the creek area up to the sidewalk at street level.
Childress Klein, the
developer of RiverGate Shopping Center, has donated an additional
tract adjacent to the existing Walkers Branch greenway trail,
bringing the total greenway land area conveyed at RiverGate to
14.898 acres. The previous parcels were accepted by the Board in
late 2006 and conveyed in early 2007. Childress Klein also built the
greenway trail in 2006. This is an excellent example of partnership
with the private sector to acquire land and build trails that
complement a new development project.
The donated land is
shown in green on the map below.
The greenway
trail at RiverGate had its Grand Opening on October 14, 2006.
