STEELE CREEK NEWS
Q & A about
Roads from SCRA Annual Meeting
(March 19, 2008)
Tim Gibbs (tgibbs@ci.charlotte.nc.us)and
Andy Grzymski (agrzymski@ci.charlotte.nc.us)
of the
Charlotte Department of Transportation discussed current
and future roadway projects in Steele Creek at the Residents
Association meeting in February. They got quite a few questions from
the audience, including many that they had to check on. Tim Gibbs'
responses are below:
RESPONSES TO
TRANSPORTATION QUESTIONS ASKED AT THE STEELE CREEK RESIDENTS
ASSOCIATION MEETING HELD ON FEBRUARY 21, 2008
1) Are the pavement markings complete at the intersection of NC 160
and Westinghouse Blvd.?
NCDOT plans to install the final pavement markings at the
intersection shortly after April 16, 2008.
2) Have left turn arrows been considered for any approach of the
NC 160/Westinghouse Blvd. intersection?
CDOT staff has initiated the process of installing left-turn arrows
for westbound Westinghouse at NC 160. Design and installation of
this signal is expected to be complete within six months.
3) The pavement along Moss Road is in poor condition.
According to the Street Maintenance Division of CDOT, Moss Road is
not scheduled for any improvements until the development in that
area is complete. At that time, Moss Road will be considered for
improvement.
4) A northbound left-turn signal is needed on NC 49 at Moss Rd.
CDOT staff has initiated the process of installing left-turn arrows
on NC 49 at Moss Road. Design and installation of this signal is
expected to be complete within six months.
5) NC 160 needs trash/debris cleaned up along it from Erwin Road
to the SC line.
Trash has been collected on the stretch of roadway between NC 49 and
Hamilton Road recently. Citizens in the area may wish to consider
NCDOT's "Adopt a Street / Highway" program, where a group of
residents and/or businesses in the community schedule periodic clean
up efforts to clear litter and receive recognition of their efforts
via a sign on installed on the roadway.
6) Sledge Road needs its intersection with NC 160 improved. Maybe
delineators along Sledge Road in this area would help.
This intersection was identified as a potential candidate project
for the NCDOT's spot safety program. The improvements at this
intersection include reconstruction to create a" T" intersection and
installation of a traffic signal. The project will be reviewed by
the Spot Safety Review board. If approved, it will be voted on at
the July meeting of the State transportation board. We should know
within the next 2 months if the project will be on the board's
agenda.
7) Is Winget Road being extended to Shopton Road West? Are there
plans to make improvements to existing Winget Road?
A portion of existing Winget Road (From Thomas McAllister Winget
District Park to just east of Planters Row Drive) will be part of a
future Carowinds Boulevard Extension that will connect with existing
Carowinds Boulevard from its current end at NC 49. The extension of
Carowinds Boulevard will also include portions of existing John
Price and Sam Neely roads.
A portion of this road is being built approximately 1/4 mile east
from Shopton Road West as part of the Chapel Cove at Glengate
subdivision and will not provide a connection to existing Winget
Road where it currently ends near Winget Park Elementary School.
This connection will occur as land is developed at an undetermined
future time.
While there is no scheduled widening of existing Winget Road at this
time, it may be considered as a candidate for improvement under the
City's Farm to Market Road program.
8) What is the schedule for realignment of Dixie River Road and
Shopton Road West at Steele Creek Road?
The realignment of Dixie River Road and Shopton Road West at Steele
Creek Road is now being designed. Construction is
anticipated to begin in spring 2009. (Revised 4/1/08)
9) When will Berewick Commons Parkway be completed?
Berewick Commons Parkway has been completed. It will be a dead-end
facility until the relocated Dixie River Road is built to intersect
it. (Revised 4/1/08)
10) When will the realignment of the Steele Creek Road's
intersections with the current Dixie River Road and Shopton Road
occur?
The realignment of Steele Creek Road's intersections with the
current Dixie River Road and Shopton Road are currently being
designed. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2009.
