Three Easements
Donated for Steele Creek Greenway Trail
(June
19, 2007)
At its June 19 meeting, the Mecklenburg County Commission accepted
donations of greenway easements within three parcels along Steele
Creek south of Westinghouse Boulevard. Although the length of the donated easements is
only .4 miles, progress continues on additional easement donations
that are being negotiated with property owners along Steele Creek
and Walkers Branch. (See
MAP.)
The
Steele Creek Community
Trail Committee has a vision of a network of trails
throughout the Steele Creek community. Small steps will lead to a
major amenity that all Steele Creek residents can enjoy.
The approved
ordinance included the following justification:
The above
greenway easements are part of an assemblage of floodplain along
Steele Creek in southwestern Mecklenburg County between Brown-Grier
Road and the South Carolina line. The initial contacts with owners
in this project area were made by a citizen who lives and works in
this area, Karl Froelich. Karl organized and has led a greenway
committee in the Steele Creek community to spearhead this project.
Due to his work in contacting and educating property owners along
the creek, as well as dozens of residents in this area, this project
is expected to be comprised primarily of donated easements to
accommodate the trail along both Steele Creek and Walkers Branch.
The above easement donations are three of approximately thirty
expected to be secured for this project.
