CMS Adopts 2007 Bond
Request - 6 Steele Creek Projects Included
(April
29, 2007) At its April 24 meeting, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School
Board adopted a 2007 funding request that will be sent to the
Mecklenburg County Commission for their consideration and possible
inclusion on the November 2007 ballot. The request would fund 53
total projects costing $510,724,732 (or $586,708,897, adjusted for
inflation).
Among the projects
are:
- New elementary school at Dixie River Road (Berewick) - $15,360,000
- New elementary school in York Road/Red Fez Club Road area - $15,360,000
- New elementary school on Hamilton Road at Smith Road - $15,360,000
- Roofing at Olympic - $350,000
- Track at Olympic - $850,000
- Stadium at Olympic - $5,025,000
The new
elementary school in the Berewick community is badly needed to
relieve Steele Creek Elementary School. The two new elementary
schools in southern Steele Creek are in response to anticipated
rapid growth in that area. The new Winget park Elementary School opened last fall and
helped relieve Lake Wylie Elementary, but due to booming population
in Steele Creek, trailers already are planned at the new school,
Improvements to
Olympic athletic facilities would have been funded by the bond issue
that failed in 2005. The board decided to include all unfunded
projects from the 2005 bond in the 2007 request.
The proposal next
goes to the Board of County Commissioners, who will decide on the
bond package that will be on the November ballot.
