New Residential
Development Planned around McDowell House
(October
1, 2006) Songbird Development of Marietta, Georgia has submitted a
rezoning petition that would allow the construction of 30 town homes
and 58 detached houses around the historic McDowell House at the
intersection of S Tryon Street and Beam Road.
According to the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission, the
McDowell Family (which secured the land as early as 1739) built the
house in three stages. A log house was built in 1790, it was
enlarged in 1843, and a four-room addition was added in the front in
1912.
According to the site
notes in the rezoning application, the house would be preserved and
may be used as an accessory structure for meetings or a clubhouse or
as a bed and breakfast inn.
Developers are
holding a public meeting on Monday, October 2 at the Tyvola Church
of God at 100 W Tyvola Road at 7:00 pm. The City Council will hold a
public hearing on November 20. See
