STEELE CREEK NEWS
Improvements to
Highway 160 and Shopton Road W Intersection Planned
(May
10, 2005) The Dixie-Berryhill Thoroughfare plan that was approved by
the Mecklenburg-Union Metropolitan Planning Commission in 2002
included a realignment of the intersection of Steele Creek Road (NC
Highway 160) and Shopton Road West.
Developers of the new Berewick
community will build a new road running between the Steele Creek
Baptist Church and the Steele Creek Masonic Lodge to connect the Berewick Town Center to the Steele Creek
Road/Shopton Road W intersection. The
intersection will be squared off, eliminating the dangerous curve
that is there now. Accidents are common. A tractor trailer struck
two vehicles there just last week, killing one woman at the scene. (See
Charlotte Observer article
Woman killed in crash involving tractor trailer - May 5.)
The intersection
reconstruction project will be funded by previously approved bonds.
However, no design work has begun.
Derrel L. Poole of the
Charlotte Department of Engineering and Property Management says
that a public meeting will be called in June to solicit input into
the intersection design. If you are interested in receiving
notification on the time and location of this meeting, contact Mr.
Poole at 704-353-1794.
