"Southwest Middle School" Most Popular Name Presented
for the New Southwest Middle School
(March 18, 2003)
Dr. Michael Shrader, principal of the new middle school, and Ron
Thompson, West Regional Middle School Superintendent, hosted a
meeting of parents, students, and friends of the school to discuss
possible school names. The most popular names were
"Southwest," "Krista McAuliffe" (a teacher from
New Hampshire who died in the 1986 Challenger space shuttle
disaster), and "Walkers Branch," which is a stream that
runs near the new school site. A committee of volunteers will
research the suggested names and report back to a meeting next
Monday, March 24 at 6:00 at Steele Creek Elementary School.
The community must
recommend three names to the School Board, which will make the final
decision on a name.
Dr. Schrader also
discussed the following:
- One of the
school colors would likely be dark blue since that is the predominant
color in the building.
- The school
mascot generally should be something that is not already used by
other local schools but something for which logos are readily
available from sports equipment and clothing vendors.
- Volunteers are
needed to help organize a PTA.
- Volunteers also
are needed for a committee to help develop a policy for
school uniforms to be presented for consideration by parents.
Parents and others
may send ideas or questions concerning the new school to Dr.
Schrader at newsouthwestmiddle@cms.k12.nc.us.
