New Elementary School is Named South Pine Academy
(May
25, 2021) At its regular meeting on May 25, the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education approved the name South
Pine Academy for the new elementary school under construction on
Sandy Porter Road.
The name received the most votes among the three finalists:
Ayrsley Town Elementary/Academy Dogwood Elementary/Academy
South Pine Elementary/Academy
The rationale is as follows: "While the pine tree is the North
Carolina state tree, it serves as a cultural symbol around the
world. To some cultures, the pine tree represents resilience. Pine
trees are known for their strong ability to adapt and survive in
ever changing environments. No matter the obstacles we may face,
like the evergreen nature of pines, we stand strong together as we
triumph and persevere."
School colors and a mascot will be chosen later. The school is
scheduled to open in August 2021. The principal is Dianna Newman (diannad.newman@cms.k12.nc.us).
